The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
