Larian Studios Unveil a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
